Ever since spending my hard-earned money for tickets during my lunch hour on a dreary Ohio day, I anticipated Lollapalooza 2003 as being the pinnacle event of the summer.
Sunday, July 20th!! Its here! Great music, good friends, perfect weather and the handsome man I love by my side... I’m having a f**king premium time!
Sometime between Audioslave and Jane's, I fight my way out of the pavilion crowd to stand in favor of the inevitably long and slow women’s pee line. On to another line for a new drink.
I feel wild from the atmosphere and margaritas, but also slightly inhibited cause I didn’t want to embarrass my boyfriend who’s more conservative than I. I try to find my crazy-loving sister and her bi-curious friend but to no avail. So I bum a smoke and start to people-watch.
Then … they come. The Dream Circus.
The energy of the tambourines and the tribal drum beat stirs my body into motion, I want to be a part of it, I have to get closer. As I make my way through the gathering crowd around them, I’m enraptured to another time and place where I’m free to be licentious without consequence. I’m a sensual young Egyptian woman, dancing before the Men of the Royal Court. The jester’s purple costume is brilliant against the drab cloths of the commoners, some who stand by idly – others who surrender their bodies to the pulsating beat. The crowd watches, the rhythm and vibrations of the music are making my heart pound faster, making my pelvis gyrate, making my arms flow. I no longer see the crowd, I have no inhibitions. I only see the other dancers, I only feel the music moving me. My body is no longer mine, it belongs to the music. I don’t want it to end.
But it had to and did.
